Hi Everyone and welcome to my Tips to Help You Sleep website. Sleep is a subject that I never thought I’d have to worry about. I spent most of my teenage years glued to a duvet and could fall asleep at the drop of a hat. The same could be said throughout most of my adult life. However, things changed for me quite dramatically a number of years ago and if I’m completely honest I’ve struggled with getting a good night’s sleep ever since.

It appears that I’m not alone in my struggles as figures released by the Sleep Association are actually quite shocking. Did you know that 75% of Americans aged from 25 to 59 suffer from some form of sleep disorder? Nearly half of these report snoring, whereas almost 40% said they unintentionally fell asleep during the day in the preceding month. I found it horrifying that nearly 5% reported falling asleep while driving in the preceding month.

It is through my research into this subject that I realized that my issues with falling asleep is just the tip of the iceberg.

This is my way of giving back.

So What Changed?

Unfortunately, I’m no stranger to grief, but losing both my parents (for both of whom I was a carer) within 9 months of each other not only a profound effect on my life in general, but I believe this was the catalyst to many, many sleepless nights. No matter what I tried, I spent hours and hours every night staring at the ceiling unable to nod off. When I eventually did fall asleep I typically woke up every hour or two and once again unable to fall asleep.

This eventually led me to feeling both physically and mentally rundown. In fact, I attribute my lack of sleep (rather than the grief of losing my parents) to me becoming socially awkward and emotionally distant. I felt constantly tired and just didn’t have the energy to do everyday things and this undoubtedly had an adverse effect on my other relationships.

What Did I Do?

I pretty much read every article, website and book I could lay my hands on the subject of insomnia. I tried various techniques and practices just to find something that would work for me. It was a long and difficult process, but eventually I found something that helped me get a peaceful night’s sleep once again.

During my research I discovered that there were many, many forms of sleep disorder, most of which I’d never heard of before. When I started to dig a little deeper it became obvious to me that millions of people around the world also suffered with a variety of sleep disorders and they too found that these were interfering with their mental, emotional, physical and social functioning.

  1. Thanks for sharing your personal story! I can relate about sleeping great in my younger years. As I get older I do wake up alot more in the night and never really thought about a sleeping disorder, just that I am old and my bladder empties quicker lol I look forward to reading more of your posts.
